Resident of Canada
To qualify for life insurance, you must be a resident of Canada.
Definition
According to the Income Tax Act, you are Canadian resident if:
- you pay income tax in Canada on your worldwide income (may require proof of payment of taxes in Canada)), or
- you live in Canada for at least 182 days a year
Canadian citizenship does not automatically grant the status of Canadian residency according to Revenue Canada standards.
Living Outside Canada
If you live outside of Canada or live permanently in the United States, you can apply for life insurance application if you are:
- recognized as a Canadian resident
- covered by a multi-life policy in which at least 50% of the lives insured are Canadian residents
Otherwise, you are a nonresident and unable to apply.
